Field dependence-independence on the Children's Embedded Figures Test: Cognitive style or cognitive level?

Administered the Peabody Picture Vocabulary Test, the Rorschach, and the Children's Embedded Figures Test (CEFT) to 9- and 12-yr-olds in a 2 * 2 design which separated the effects of chronological age and mental age (MA, 9 and 12 yrs). 52% of CEFT variance was accounted for by its correlation with MA, and the strength of the relationship between the Rorschach and field dependence derived largely from the mutual correlation of the variables with the cognitive developmental level reflected in MA. Therapists' psychological adaptation to client suicide.

Explores psychotherapists' complex reactions to client suicide, focusing on therapists' psychological adaptation (i.e., emotional, cognitive, and behavioral responses) and therapists' life experiences. Based on a literature review and research findings, implications are identified for therapists, supervisors, and researchers. Suggestions to therapists include using personal and professional supports and participating in a postsuicide review in response to a client suicide. The primary task for supervisors is to create experiences that will positively impact therapists' beliefs about their professional role. Researchers are encouraged to increase the quality of their research designs, attend to findings in related fields, and investigate neglected areas identified by the author. The manufacture of microporous membranes and their structure and properties

Microporous membranes suitable for use in ultra- and microfiltration can now be made from a wide range of inorganic and organic materials. Inorganic membranes are made by methods derived from practices that are standard in the ceramics industry. Organic membranes are made from synthetic and modified natural polymers either in the dry state by exploiting anisotropic mechanical properties or from solutions of the polymer by one of the several versions of the phase inversion process. Thanks to the good understanding of the thermodynamic and kinetic properties of polymer-liquid systems resulting from 50 years of careful research, the morphology of asymmetric membranes made by phase inversion can be controlled in fair detail. This short article surveys the methods of manufacturing membranes in relation to their structures.

A technique for encoding lines and regions in engineering drawings

An improvement to a method of extracting line and region information from technical drawings is presented. A scheme for compressing this information as it is being found is also given. The encoding scheme is based on a combination of run-length codes, direction chain codes, and Huffman codes. It is efficient, requires minimal storage, and achieves favorable compression ratios. Experimental results from four typical line drawings are presented.     

Exact coupled-mode theories for multilayer interference coatingswith arbitrary strong index modulations

The analysis of multilayered interference coatings by coupled-mode theory is considered to be an approximation useful for small index, gain, and/or loss modulations. In this paper, we show that an exact analysis of a multilayer coating with coupled-mode theory is possible by redefining the coupling and detuning coefficients. We derive the correct coefficients for the case of a Bragg mirror consisting of layers with arbitrary high and low refractive indexes. A detailed comparison with coupled-mode theories using the standard coupling and detuning coefficients is presented     

Anomalies in the rheological behavior of polyethylene with very broad molecular weight distribution

The rheological behavior of high density polyethylenes with very broad molecular weight distribution is studied in the molten state starting from freshly synthesized powders. The complex viscosity increases slowly up to a limiting value as a function of ageing of the polymer and faster when the molten polymer is stirred. The phenomena are explained by an heterogeneous distribution of very high molecular weight nodules in the polymer arising from the synthesis and is proved by the preparation and characterization of polymers presenting the opposite heterogeneity and behavior (very low molecular weight nodules).     

Application of fuzzy relational modelling to industrial product quality control

Industrial product quality control is a typical mathematical programming and optimization problem. Unfortunately, complete and precise models are not always available for many industrial processes. A fuzzy relation modelling approach is proposed to describe approximate relationships among system variables and reconcile empirical equations. Symmetric fuzzy decision-making is transformed into a non-linear function maximization problem. The approach is applied to optimization of a wood chip refining process. It is used either to improve pulp quality within the refiner operation range, or to reduce operation costs while maintaining an acceptable pulp quality.
